Blacksad, by Juan Diaz Canales & Juanjo Guarnido

Private investigator John Blacksad is up to his feline ears in mystery, digging into the backstories behind murders, child abductions, and nuclear secrets. Guarnido's sumptuously painted pages and rich cinematic style bring the world of 1950s America to vibrant life, with Canales weaving in fascinating tales of conspiracy, racial tension, and the "red scare" Communist witch hunts of the time. Guarnido reinvents anthropomorphism in these pages, and industry colleagues no less than Will Eisner, Jim Steranko, and Tim Sale are fans! Whether John Blacksad is falling for dangerous women or getting beaten to within an inch of his life, his stories are, simply put, unforgettable.

This book is wonderful in every way. If you love a great story, distinct characters and absolutely gorgeous artwork, you will love Blacksad. It's definitely one of a kind. (The content is not for the little ones).

Featuring some of the most gorgeous artwork I've ever seen, and scripting that would make Philip Marlowe proud, Blacksad is probably the best comic you've never heard of. Republished in English earlier this year by Dark Horse, the critically and commercially successful story follows private detective John Blacksad through three separate cases dealing with classic noir trappings like murder, kidnapping, and Cold War hysteria. It's a brilliant collection, and is a book that every single person should be reading.
So we hear you're looking for something to read. That's great because we've got a ton of recommendations on what comics you should be checking out. Every week we'll pick out one gem from the longboxes or trade shelves that you absolutely cannot miss. We're talking mainstream, indie, full storylines, single issues, and beyond. If there's a comic we enjoy that we think you will too, you'll hear all about it on Read This Now!
